winter-coats

As ecstatic as I am about spring fashion 2013 (peek-a-boo midriffs, sheer fabrics, ruffles & lace, aquatic palettes) I’m still overjoyed to rock out the last couple months of my winter wardrobe. Living in Michigan, I still have more than a few lengthy chilly, wintry weeks to endure – or more so relish in fashion-wise! When it comes to cold weather gear, I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE: coats, jackets, capes, boots, scarves and gloves! Sometimes, I prefer my coat to the outfit underneath – especially paired with long, leather gloves. I really wish more women would rock a leather glove (long or short) with their outerwear – it truly is one of the most stylish and chic accessories for fall/winter. Plus, it looks just as fanciful sans coat. Back to the coat, it really is the ultimate  pièce de résistance for winter style. And with a plethora of styles and textures to select from, where do you begin? The criterion for choosing the perfect coat is similar to picking the perfect dress –style, fit, occasion and functionality. Personally, I like to have at least two to three different coats and jackets per season – depending on the occasion. I'll put it this way, I wouldn’t plan on working out, outdoors, in my double-breasted wool coat with fur collar. Nor would I suggest for you to do the same!

In regards to coats, think extravagant volume, futuristic structure and luxurious textures. Double-breasted coats with a modern twist – leather trench, classic trench coat with peplum and leather paneling, an innovative take on your standard wool coat, a military A-Line dress coat: perfect for day and night and is flattering on every figure. This sounds like music to my ears, considering all of the layers I'm currently sporting just to keep warm indoors. Not having to worry about being able to barely zip up my coat, without having to forgo a cable knit sweater, or peel away two layers of shirts, is a relief. Plus, I'm really digging the fact you can control the exact amount of volume you want. With a coat, you can easily add a belt to cinch the waist to accentuate your silhouette. Same applies to a cape- just note to wrap the belt through the armholes of the cape and inside the back of it; in order to maintain the free-flowing drape.  Instead of focusing the volume around your frame, highlight the sleeves. Shortened, wide arm sleeves are a great focal point- especially, with a long, leather glove! I'm telling you, if you haven't tried this style, it's a must! Talk about channeling your own inner Grace Kelly! C'est magnifique! If you choose a voluminous style, make sure to opt for a cut that hits the knee, or just below, or else you will lose your silhouette in its entirety and look sloppy. If you're more classic than cutting edge, you can stick with a quintessential pea coat – a wool, double-breasted, tailored outerwear staple. It will keep you comfy warm and simply stylish. Be cognizant that the fit should hit at your hip – or just below it.

Perhaps, you are interested in slightly less flair and want a bit of functionality. A thin-layered puffer coat would be a perfect fit.  Fortunately, the newer puffer coats have a thin quilt , which aids in not having to look like a giant marshmallow. This season, majority of the puffer coats come equipped with a belt and a hood attached- major plus! Other styles I'm also loving is the exaggerated cowl neck design and a fur-lined hood trim – adding a hint of elegance to snow chic. In regards to length, a cropped jacket or knee-length are both suitable. A couple of my favorite brands are Add Down and Moncler. Presently I'm sporting the Add Down Goose down fur-lined hood coat. It's divine! If you desire more functionality to this style, then you should definitely visit Lulelemon (101 S. Old Woodward Ave-101 S. Old Woodward Ave- 248.593.9760) -specializes in yoga and running gear. Whether you're an outdoor runner or not, they have a couple of lightweight down pieces that I'm currently obsessing over – What the Fluff Pullover and the striking red What the Fluff Jacket. As a non-runner, I'd definitely start running for the hot red What the Fluff!

You can never go wrong with a cropped leather jacket. The biker style doesn't have to necessarily be a casual, jeans only staple. It adds edge to a more formal, glamorous look. The updated classic leather jacket – cut, textures, colors, decor, collar style- offers  a chicness with a flared skirt, gown and a form-fitting sheath. Maybe you don't want to cover your fabulous outfit despite the chilly temperature. It's perfectly fine to bare it, but because this style is minimal in itself, make sure to add some extra warmth via accessories- scarves, hats, gloves and opaque, thick tights.

If you're seeking a simpler, classic piece that is truly functional for outdoor pleasure, check out Roots in downtown Birmingham (211 W. Maple Rd- 248.723.1407) . Reputably known for their high quality leather, durable gear and stylish, comfortable clothing, they've been a bastion of Birmingham for decades. Whilst they are still in stock, take a gander at their hottest winter coats of the season- the Toggle coat,  Mountain parkaSoftshell and of course the Roots classics. The Roots toggle coat came in two different tweed mixes – black and camel- and was the hottest Roots' winter coat item. A dynamite choice for keeping it stylish for both day and night. The Mountain parka is akin to the men's surplus military style, but fashioned with a feminine touch – fur and leather trim pockets and hood toggles. If you plan to be outdoors for a lengthy period, the Softshell is the one for you. It covers all the extreme weather basics: waterproof, windproof, thin down lining, insulated with bonded fleece to keep you extra warm without the bulk. And of course, you can never go wrong with the classics.

Remember, choosing the perfect coat is like choosing the perfect dress. Base it off your lifestyle, personality, functionality, style and preference. I do suggest, universally, to step outside the black color box and experiment with colors. Presently, am partial to Oxblood red -which has carried over from Fall 2012- and shiny metallics. I think metallic puffer coats are super chic and I love a metallic leather coat.  As I stated before, the coat is your statement piece. Have fun with it! Explore different textures, materials and patterns – tweed, houndstooth, graphic, animal print. Also, don't forget to accessorize with warm weather adornments! But, most importantly, stay warm and winter chic!
