{SS} What inspired you to start your Blog?
{DF} I started The Closet Confessional in September 2012 after I was in remission from cancer. After getting diagnosed, I started blogging as a way to own my course of treatment and put cancer in its proper place in my life. It proved to be a huge relief to have an outlet to channel my voice. But, after enduring 9 months of treatments, I was tired of writing about such an emotional time in my life and really didn't want to be just the “Cancer Girl." My experience with cancer allowed me the freedom to spend more time pursuing my passions and less time on other less rewarding work, which is why I started The Closet Confessional. Add to all that, there was a serious lack of conversation about fashion in Detroit. I wanted to participate in and encourage that dialogue.
{SS} Your go to blog list?
{DF} There are so many! Some of my favorites are The Sartorialist, Atlantic-Pacific, and The Glamourai.
{SS} In regards to your personal style, do you have a signature accessory?
{DF} I’m a big fan of scarves – they add dimension to an outfit. My favorite is a leopard print one that I’ve lived in for years.
{SS} A few items in your "styleshack" A.K.A closet that you can't live without?
{DF} My Clare Vivier Leopard Print Clutch that I got at Willys Detroit, anything striped, and statement shoes (like this Zara pair I found at Thrift on the Ave).
{SS} Who inspires your style? Favorite Style Icon?
{DF} So many people inspire me! Kate Moss is flawless and has perfected looking effortlessly cool. Francoise Hardy epitomizes French chic. And Iris Apfel is just an all around badass, even at 92 years old!
{SS} Style Archetype?
{DF} Classic, but with a Glam Madame and Edgy twist.
{DF} Lost in the Wild Leopard Top from Lexi Drew Cropped Tuxedo Blazer, Capulet from Rear Ends Avery BF Shirt from Bivouac
{SS} Favorite "local" boutique(s)?
{DF} The Peacock Room and Thrift on the Ave are two of my favorite Detroit shops. Plus owners are absolutely lovely and go out of the way to make you feel at home in their stores.
{SS} Favorite fashion social media app or social media site?
{DF} Definitely Instagram. I follow all my favorite bloggers and fashion designers and am constantly inspired by the beautiful content.
{SS} Currently listening to….
{DF} I’m constantly dancing to Motown in my loft. Gotta stick with the classics.
{SS} What inspired your 4th of July Instagram/post?
{DF} Since I’m a fashion blogger, I knew I wanted an on-theme outfit for the holiday. Sunset at the mound (near the Ren Cen) seemed like the perfect spot to highlight both my outfit and the city.
{DF} I’m part of a book club in the city and we just finished The Goldfinch. It’s long at almost 800 pages, but makes for a great discussion.
{DF} Everywhere? That’s so tough since I love the travel. I have a goal to visit every continent (5 down, 2 to go!), so if the costs were covered, I’d say Antarctica since it will most likely be the most difficult (and most expensive) place I go. Plus, those penguins are totally adorable.
{SS} Words to live by?
{DF} “Style is attitude, attitude, attitude. It ain’t what you do, it’s the way you do it.” Iris Apfel.
